The President and Federal Chancellor are in the house, together with Pamela Anderson, Brook Shields, They Mayor of Vienna and the President of Finland. Sadly Alain Delon, the husband of tragic and beautiful Austrian actress Romy Schneider, most famous for playing the tragic and beautiful Austrian Empress Elisabeth [Sisi], had to cancel his appearance due to ill health.
This was the State Opera this morning, as I chugged by on my tram, with its new ball entrance and a team of balaclavaed men in black – I assume the security – there was a reported 300 extra police on duty.
The pictures on the TV showed ladies squeezed into ball gowns, squeezed into boxes. They really do cram everyone in. The poor old Chancellor was on a 07.00 flight to London this morning, had a chat with Dave and Angie about the EU and then hotfooted back to Vienna, reportedly changing into his evening dress at the airport.
Most of the VIP’s from Austrian business are there: the head of the insurance companies, the tourist board, the banks and all the usual suspects. One of Austria’s top manufacturing concerns, Swarowski, are a partner of the Opera ball and design the tiaras worn by the debutants [160 pairs – not 180, as previously reported]. This year’s tiara has been designed by Maria Boltenstern and is a rising star design, inspired by blooming flowers. Pictures of the tiara here
Although the opera ball is the highlight of the ball calendar, the shrovetide celebrations have a few days to run still so watch this space for more fun from Austria 🙂
